| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to support final-year Speech and Language Pathology students in consolidating and refining their clinical competencies in preparation for entry into professional practice. Building on foundational knowledge and experience gained in previous clinical placements, students will engage with increasingly complex clinical scenarios that require advanced clinical reasoning, diagnostic formulation, and individualized intervention planning. Students will explore a range of professional skills relevant to working with diverse client groups, including case formulation, goal setting, and outcome measurement. Through structured clinical discussions, role-play, simulated case studies, and reflective tasks, they will deepen their understanding of evidence-based practice, culturally responsive care, and ethical decision-making. Key content areas include: • Complex case formulation and intervention planning • Clinical reasoning in multidisciplinary and multicultural contexts • Critical incident analysis and ethical dilemmas • Interpreting and reporting standardized and informal assessment data • Goal-setting and use of outcome measures • Reflective practice frameworks (e.g. SOAP, Gibbs’ Cycle) • Advanced clinical documentation and report writing • Professional preparedness (e.g. registration, supervision, portfolio development) The study-unit will be delivered through a problem-based learning (PBL) approach alongside workshops and tutorials that promote independent thinking, peer collaboration, and clinical confidence. A range of assessment and intervention resources will be made freely available to students, and up-to-date research articles will be shared throughout the course to encourage integration of theory and practice. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Develop advanced-level clinical competencies across assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and case management; - Enhance integration of theoretical knowledge with clinical decision-making; - Promote reflective, ethical, and culturally responsive practice; - Encourage critical engagement with current research and evidence-based practices. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and apply advanced clinical frameworks to complex cases; - Interpret and evaluate assessment data across multiple domains of speech, language, and communication; - Critically appraise research relevant to advanced SLP practice. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Deliver comprehensive, individualized intervention plans across settings; - Justify clinical decisions using evidence-based reasoning; - Demonstrate professional competencies aligned with standards of practice (e.g. HPC or equivalent); - Engage in structured self-evaluation and peer feedback using reflective tools.
